Mississippi’s Celebrating Freedom Art Competition 

This art competition is open to all Mississippians who meet the requirements below

and is limited to one entry per person.

DIVISIONS:

  • Senior Adult Division: Age 60 or over 

  • Adult Division:  Age 18-59

  • High School Division: Entering 9th grade-Entering 12th grade

  • Jr High Division: Entering 6th grade-entering 8th

  • Elementary Division: 1st grade-entering 5th grade

 

 

 

PRIZES:
Five artworks per division will be selected for display at the City of Brandon Freedom Fest on July 3, 2024 at the Brandon Amphitheatre located at 8190 Rock Way off Boyce Thompson Drive, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
Artists will be notified by June 26th as a selected “Favorite Five” artwork. The works must be delivered on July 3rd between 3:00pm-5:00pm to the Hometown Magazines booth to qualify for final judging. 
1st place will be selected from each division. The winning works will receive awards and recognition at the event, be published in Hometown Rankin Magazine, and displayed at Pacesetter Gallery in Flowood in August.
Winners will be judged and announced during Freedom Fest. All artworks must be picked up after the event between 9:00pm- 9:30pm at the Hometown Magazines booth.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY
Artists must submit their information and upload a digital image of their work (**images must be high resolution in .png or .jpg format, no larger than 2 MB). Information and images must be received by 06/21/2024 to be considered for the competition. Artwork may not be altered in any way after digital image is submitted. 
Each artwork must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian of the student if under 18 years old. 

 

 

ARTWORK CRITERIA
Artwork must measure 11”x14” before framing. Thinner frames are encouraged.
All artwork chosen as a Favorite Five to be displayed at the show must be framed in a non-damaged, clean frame with D-rings and wire hanger. No sawtooth hangers accepted. Artworks on paper must be framed behind glass and gallery-wrapped canvases must also be framed. 
Artwork may not include nudity, profanity, violence, politics, or loosely attached moveable parts that hang outside the framed area. 
Artwork mediums accepted are pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylic, oil, and pastel. Computer drawn digital art is not accepted. 
Artwork will be evaluated based on the following criteria: creativity, originality, artistic skill based on the elements and principles of art, composition, craftsmanship, and interpretation of the subject matter/theme.


CONTENT REQUIREMENTS
Submissions must communicate the idea(s), aspect(s), theme(s), etc. of our nation’s freedom through their content/titles.
Please read, and follow all rules for eligibility and terms of agreement.  Any work of finalists not received by the required deadline, or not in the form required, will be disqualified. 


SUBMISSION TERMS OF AGREEMENT
When submitting artwork, you must agree to the following terms and conditions. All artwork was made by the Submitting Artist and was not copied from another artwork, illustration, website, or made by another artist. Any photograph used for reference was done so with the written permission of the photographer or can be proven it was taken from a free content site. 


I represent that this submission does not infringe any third-party intellectual property rights, nor does it contain any material that is of a defamatory, vulgar, contains violence, politics, or otherwise inappropriate nature. I understand that the artwork remains my property, but I give Hometown Magazines and Pacesetter Gallery the right to use photos of the artwork and photos of the artist for promotional and marketing purposes before and after the event. 


I give Hometown Magazines permission to use, reproduce, publish, and distribute copies to the public images of my art and images of myself, included but not limited to, the Submitting Artist’s name, school, grade, and any photographs and or videos containing the Summiting Artist’s image and/or voice for purposes of this contest. I certify I am at least eighteen years of age or am the parent/guardian of the Submitting Artist and fully understand and agree to the contents. I understand that Hometown Magazines is not responsible for my work while in their possession and that I am entering my piece

JUDGING:
Judging to narrow down to the top five will be done from digital image submissions.  Final selection of 1st place for each division will be done in-person at the show. The competition will be judged by Keri Davis, owner/artist of Pacesetter Gallery in Flowood.


ABOUT JUDGE KERI DAVIS:
Keri Davis is a professional artist, art teacher, and owner of Pacesetter Gallery. Her work includes watercolors, acrylic paintings, and printmaking, which is available both in her own gallery and at The Showroom Gallery in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her work has been featured on the cover of books and book illustrations and can be found in residential homes, banks, and other commercial buildings across the Southern United States.

Opening award-winning Pacesetter Gallery in 2021, Keri has focused on promoting Mississippi artists and Mississippi-made original art both locally and nationally. You can easily find her painting at the gallery, planning the next Paint & Sip, teaching art lessons and conducting summer camps for youth and adults, and sharing the art of the over sixty, talented Mississippi artists to gallery visitors.
